A lovely, soothing listen this, vaguely celebratory, and certainly warm and intimate. Of course (as is the wont with LPs of this nature) a brass section occasionally rears its head, Benni Hem Hem style, but it’s not too intrusive.

What’s truly great about this LP though is Essie Jain’s alto voice, which is very reassuring in a “mother will tuck you up now my sweet” kind of way. Now and again (as seen in The Rights), there’s a stab at jauntiness, which seems to offer future developments as a sort of torch singer (Brecht, anyone?) or a cod-bar room chanteuse (as seen in the reflective Stop), but mostly its soothing, mildly upbeat stuff like You, Do It or Eavesdrop which rules the roost.

I’d be interested to see where she takes her undoubted talents.
