Sonny J – Disastro

#1794 - 20--Chris Gibson--Sonny J – Disastro --2008-07-20 00:00:00

#Are we getting anything here that we couldn't get better by visiting the bargain bins at the local HMV? The novelty of the new release perhaps, and maybe that's enough in the 21st century: where Duffy, Winehouse and Ronson can repackage the sixties and become superstars. -

Sonny J – Disastro

It's 1998. Fat Boy Slim can do no wrong, the big beat sound and the swaggering Skint records provide the soundtrack for beer-fuelled nights out. Nick a riff from here, a witty sample from there, a beat from somewhere else and you’re onto a winner. Sample it, Loop it, Fuck it, Eat it. Wa-hay! Hang on a minute....we're a decade late. Bugger it.

It is true this album has great tracks to soundtrack that “getting ready to go out” feeling (I'm thinking I'm So Heavy, which uses the phone conversation of someone auditioning for a band to fantastic comic effect), and other tracks that'll get most dance floors filled (Enfant Terrible or Can't Stop Moving), but are we getting anything here that we couldn't get better by visiting the bargain bins at the local HMV? The novelty of the new release perhaps, and maybe that's enough in the 21st century: where Duffy, Winehouse and Ronson can repackage the sixties and become superstars.
