Wire – Object 47

Marvellous stuff! Punchy and possessing the same flinty, obtuse worldview that they were originally famous for, Wire’s Object 47 can stand up to anything they’ve done, or anything about for that matter. The opener One of Us is a belter with its repeat chorus righteously blazing out and is a remarkably positive ors d’ouvres, full of vim and vigour.

The old questioning, dissecting spirit can be found in stuff like Circumspect and Perspex Icon (a lot of their tracks seem to be intent on pulling ideas or words apart for some form of reflective, slightly reserved inspection).

And the old gloomy atmosphere, not a million miles away from 154, can be heard on Patient Flees and Hard Currency. They don’t seem to have gone soft or splurged out at all. In fact the end track, All Fours, is about as vibrant a Wire track as I’ve heard in many a moon.

As for the question of whether Wire should be making records in this post-post modern day and age, I recently played this LP to some unsuspecting Bright Young Things who all asked me who the band was. Question answered?

Go and get this.
